Virgin Meme

Thanks so much for including me in your chain-mail meme Michelle! (Add sarcasm here), but it actually was a lot of fun to do! The five things I miss most from my child hood (not in any particular order other than the order that my brain could come up with something) are listed below, and of course, what fun would this be if I didn't pass it on to three others as well, straight off the top of Pork Fried - BUNNY, FAITH, MARGARET...tag.

This was hard to do because there was so many many possibilities, but I just went with the first 5 that popped into my mind, I could have made it 15 easy.

1) I miss Bobby Sherman. I don’t know, I was like less than five, but I had his 45 "Easy Come Easy Go" and listened to it over and over and over and over on my little plastic 45 player. That is until my sister broke it out of anger. I cried like a baby. My parents never replaced that 45, and now that I think of it, I am old enough to do that on my own! Thank you Amazon! (You can listen to the song on the above link). I can't believe the guy has his own web site now (bobbysherman.com), he's currently a cop with the LAPD!

2) I miss multicolored shag carpeting, avocado appliances and orange counter tops. People just don't have a sense of style anymore, including my wife who insists on stainless steel. If I ever win the lottery I am going to build a second "throwback kitchen", formica and all.

3) I miss fireflies. As a child, summer seemed to go on forever. We would chase those damn things all night long, collecting them in jars and then letting them go before bed. I rarely see any now, and I wonder if it has something to do with geography or global warming.

4) Like Michelle, I miss wandering in the woods. At the tender age of 10, I would leave at sun up, come back just before dark. Me and my pal (a girl across the street) would hike miles through the woods to the Illinois River, tracking animal footprints in the mud. The other boys would tease me about playing with a girl, but she was the best damn frog catcher on the street! We never came home without a snake, toad, turtle, tadpole or bug to put into our tank and examine for a day. I never felt frightened or scared, I never knew how I was going to get back home, but always did. I felt more at home among the trees then I did at home, and to this day, it is a thrill and a pleasure to find some patch of woodland to hike without a house or car in sight. And no, I wouldn't dream of letting my kid do it, what they hell were you thinking mom?

5) Finally, I miss my Grandmother on my mothers side, Nonnie. She was a no nonsense second generation gal who told it like it is, made a mean gravy (that’s tomato sauce for the rest of you) but always had time for me. She had a great house in upstate NY with huge red high-backed chairs, green metal cabinets and a moldy old basement full of turn of the century "treasure", oh and a grotto out back with a statue of the Madonna (not the material girl).  I wish she were still around so I could visit her in that house with my family.  She had strength, dignity and grace, it was the way she lived her life and the way she left it. I miss her.

Bobby Sherman! Oh, how I ate up "Here Come the Brides" when I was a kid. I even had a Bobby Sherman lunch box.

We get a lot more fireflies here in the country than in the 'burbs. Watching them flickering through the trees behind the barn - it's magic. And, Jaye, we called them "lightening bugs" when I was a kid in Texas and later in Maryland, so it's not just a Texas thing.

I miss two newspapers in a town.

I miss Venus Map Pencils.

I miss cork under the bottle top on a glass bottle Coke.

I miss Griff's $.25 hamburgers.

We have LOTS of fireflys in our yard! I love watching my son catch them. That was also one of my favorite childhood activities--firefly lanterns!

These are some great memories, chuck. I love reading this meme but it seems like SO much work. I will try it soon though since I have now been tagged twice. I am not very good at linking because I lose posts that way. Perhaps that is why I've been putting it off!
