A few months ago I talked my sister-in-law into doing the race with me. She was overweight, had a BMI of about 40, and had just gotten lap-band surgery. She hesitantly agreed, even though she could not see the reason for walking 13 miles in a row! This was a person who used to grumble about going up our stairs to watch a movie. Since then, due to her lap-band, she has lost somewhere around 50 pounds and looks terrific.
Lap-band, and my sister-in-law, are topics for another post. The important thing here is that at least I have someone to go with this time. To be honest, I doubt very much I would be going ahead with it at all if she wasn't involved...I would have found an excuse. Having someone to train with, to talk to about the race, has kept me accountable. And seeing her enthusiasm for walking and jogging grow over this training period, has also been it's own reward. She is now an avid walker / jogger, and is already looking ahead to other races!
I may have created one of those annoying runners you have to doge on the side of a rainy road...and are jealous of for their focus and determination!
Wish her luck as well! "M", you can do it...and thanks for keeping me company!
I don't think I have really inspired her much, more like pulled and prodded! She inspires me at this point.

That is wonderful that you have inspired her(and thus yourself) to do this. The training is the key part, not so much the race.
